What is a Proa?
A proa is a Pacific outrigger sailing canoe originated by the island peoples of the North Pacific. Those early proas were known for their stability and long range. The Proa 2000 is an ultra modern yacht with its concept derived from the polynesian dugout boats with bamboo outriggers.
When the owner of the Proa 2000 was looking for a yacht, he wanted something that would be very stable and would provide maximum comfort and space for his guests. He has owned and sailed many yachts throughout the past 20 years and felt that the humble design of the Pacific Islanders' proa was just the thing he needed. Since then, we have fine tuned the design by Ian Mitchell (a Naval Architect from NZ) with some help from the Huston office of American Bureau of Shipping in Houston. With approved plans in hand, steel was cut in April 1998 and the keel was laid on 26 May 1998.
The yacht is powered by a single 2000hp engine with a Counter Rotating Propeller (CRP) Azimuth Drive. The yacht has a speed of 15 knots at 90%MCR.The yacht is also equipped with a 600hp Retractable Thruster that is also capable of propelling the yacht at a speed of seven knots.With both the forward and aft drives the yacht could literally walk sideways which makes berthing and unberthing a breeze. Two units of 300kw generators would take care of all the power requirements of the yacht with a 85kw genset for emergency.All other essential equipment like watermakers,aircon, navigation equipment etc are of exceptional yacht quality. At cruising speed the yacht has a range in excess of 10,000 nautical miles. The yacht can easily accomodate 22 guests and 18 crew in luxurious standards with plenty of room left for other leisure activities.
